Synopsis:
Preach, a gifted poet, spends his days smoking weed and entertaining many women. After a visit to his grief counselor, she challenges him to go one week without sex or weed, he finds it difficult to do and makes the decision to regain control over his life,but in the process, he finds himself at a crossroad of learning how to love his self while falling in love with his supplier, Arika.
Character Analysis:

Terry “Preach” Cummings: Male, early 20’s, Af.-Am.. Preach is an Atlanta implant from Chicago, who dropped out of high school after the death of his girlfriend and works as a literacy coach for a Midtown literacy center. Sure he’s smart and cool, but he also has an addiction to weed and sex and if it hadn’t been for his supplier and grief counselor he would lost his way a long time ago.

Arika Smith: Female, Mid 30’s. Medicinal Marijuana Pharmacist. A sharp, moody, brilliant pharmacist/agriculturalist. Arika owns The Agriculture, a bed and breakfast type hospice facility located on the edge of Atlanta, where her first priority is to help as many of her clients as she can through the consumption of medicinal marijuana that will help to alleviate their pain. She is the best friend and love interest of Preach.

Dr. Te’Chia Williamson: Female, 30-something. Grief Counselor. Dr. Williamson is Preach’s grief counselor during his time of bad dreams and memories of his deceased girlfriend, and she uses unorthodox practices of treatments to help her patients to recover and heal.

Benardaquavious –aka- Fatboy: Young Male, teen. Fatboy is a student of Preach who has problems with stuttering and comprehending what he reads. He loves candy and shooting dice with Preach, who treats him like a little brother.

Tanya (Fatboy’s Momma): Female, Mid-Late 20’s. Young, sweet, and hood. Tanya is the quintessential of the Atlanta hood chick escaping the hood for greener pastures to raise her son. Tanya is 9-5’er working on getting her personal life in order for her and her son.

Mrs. Carolyn Watson: Female, 50-something. Mrs. Watson is an illiterate Atlanta debutante. Mrs. Watson was considered a show piece all the years of her life, and through the years she was never forced to go to school, and her mother pushed her into being married early, where she prided her daughter on being taking care of, instead of taking care of herself.

Mrs. Althea Algiers: Female, Early 40’s. Married, strong, freaky, intelligent. Althea is the owner and operator of the Adaptation Literacy Center. She has a sexual relationship with Preach, because she considers her husband to be boring, and she needs excitement throughout her busy and professional life, and Preach is able to give that.

Mikey T: Male, mid-20’s. Mikey T is an amateur boxer with a glass jaw. Mikey T works hard for the small fights he gets to help take care of his family. He is Preach's closest friend.

Donna: Female, mid-20’s White. Donna is Mikey T’s white girlfriend with the banging body, and the volatile attitude. She loves Mikey T and believes in him, yet she does not accept his complacent ways, and in doing so she almost lives to put him down thinking that is going to uplift him.

Gail: Female, early 20’s. Preach’s deceased girlfriend in Chicago.

Society’s View” According to Jazzy Singer Indi Tyton by Dicey Grenor.


After interviewing several authors and filmmakers, it’s only fitting to add some musical talent to the mix. Today’s interview is with artist extraordinaire, Indi Tyton. We met during our first year of law school, but kept in touch even after she decided to leave school and go on to bigger and better things in the music industry. And after all this time, I have to tell you honestly–I LOVE her music.

1. Indi, I LOVE your jazzy tunes, soulful voice, and natural beauty. Who most influences your musical/ artistic style and why?

I come from a musical family, so I have always been surrounded by beautiful voices and music. My grandmother sang Jazz for many years; I spent my early years driving from the Washington, DC area to Richmond, VA almost every weekend for my Dad’s band practice; one of my aunts is a renowned Opera singer. I actually enjoy listening to almost all music genres. If I like the song, it doesn’t matter.

2. As a songwriter and singer, which do you find most challenging, writing songs or performing them and why?

Definitely performing them! I am growing out of my shyness as far as singing. Sometimes I experience slight stage fright but it can be attributed to the fact that I am somewhat of a perfectionist, so if the first note that comes out of my mouth isn’t “perfect”, it makes me a bit nervous sometimes. I know that over time, with more practice, I will get over it!
As far as songwriting, I am very melodic in my approach. My songs usually start with a melody that “comes to me” in my mind or if I write down some words to a new song, I work hard to establish the melody pronto. I also enjoy dancing very much, so for my next album, I plan to make more upbeat songs, where I can display some of my dancing abilities on my music videos. I feel like its going to help me get over the apprehension I have sometimes.

3. You and filmmaker, Deri Tyton, collaborate in music, film, and at home as parents. What is the best part of working side-by-side with your spouse on various projects? The most challenging?

The most exciting part about working with Deri on projects is seeing our ideas and hard work come into fruition. We both believe in each other’s abilities, which is a real blessing. Now let me tell you, it is a challenge sometimes because we are both artists, pursuing our individual and joint “dreams”, and since we are also parents, we often have scheduling conflicts yet we try really hard to not get in each other’s way and help out as much as we can.

4. With so many talents (ie. singing, fashion designing, writing, dancing…) which are you most passionate about and what drives that passion?

At the end of day, I can truly say that my passion for music outweighs the rest. I am very blessed with talents, so many that sometimes I get a bit overwhelmed (yet very thankful to God for them). It actually took quite some time to figure out that I wanted to be a performing artist. Honestly, it wasn’t until the summer before I got my first Master’s degree (in Psychology) that I realized that the entertainment business was for me. Even then, I was so worried about becoming a “starving artist”, and what my family and peers would say, and also not wanting to turn my back on my education, that it took me six years to really get serious about it.
What drives me now, is pleasing God by following the purpose that he has laid out for me. Also, having children really light a fire underneath me. I want my children to witness me really going after what I feel that I should be doing in my life, and I pray that they understand that true success is not in how much money you make but finding your true life’s work and having the motivation and focus to actually go after it! I also want to show people that may feel like they waited too long to pursue their “passion”, that its never too late, especially the parents out in the world. It’s all about balance (haven’t perfected it, but I’m taking steps towards it).

5. Where do you see yourself career-wise in ten years?

Ten years from now, I see myself still performing, ownership in a company that is a major player in the music and film industries, and also as a college professor, at least half time (maybe on-line if I have to travel a lot), teaching courses related to the entertainment industry. I love being an artist, and I also love being an academic person, and I want to be instrumental in grooming the next generation.

6. Which of your songs is your favorite and why? What do you want fans to feel most when they listen to it?

On my current album, Society’s View, I do not have a “favorite” song per se, because they all hold a special place in my heart. It was my first full recording experience, I learned so much, and I will never forget the process. “Different Places” is actually the first song I ever wrote, so it definitely is up at the top. My favorite songs to sing are “Whatever Comes Our Way” and “It Hurts When I Breathe”. I want my fans to get an introduction to an element of my singing style and I want them to really take the time to listen to messages in the songs on the album. I endured a lot to record “Society’s View”. Half of my album was recorded while being pregnant with my son, and the other half was recorded while I was pregnant with my daughter. I was very sick during the first four months of both pregnancies yet, I was to share a piece of myself with the world. I am very proud of the results!

Tyler Perry...."How to be Successful"

Today I watched this video probably about seven or eight times. It wasn't because Tyler Perry said anything "new" per se, but the message really hit home because the moment I watched it, I knew I had to make some changes in my life.

I admittedly have the tendency to shift my focus from time to time. The main reason is because I have been blessed with an abundance of talents. For years, I have been trying to figure out how to use all of them. It is now solidified in my brain that if I really focus on the one big task (HUGE task), that God himself has been telling me and showing me that I need to do (for years), all the other "seeds" that I have "planted" will fall into place and if they do not manifest, it was not really in my cards anyway. How I ended up on the Gibson Guitar bus

When I returned to work at Gibson Guitar Corporation in 2004 (I was previously the Executive Assistant to the CEO), my formal title was- Marketing Specialist. It was actually my most fun job ever, because I wore many hats. I worked on the first Guitartown project, worked in events, assisted with the Holiday TV Campaign, etc. I ended up on the side of the bus because while I was sitting in a marketing meeting discussing possible models for the bus, I noticed that the "higher ups" did not mention having any "people of color". (I do not think it was intentional) When I mentioned it, one of the staff asked me to consider being a model. After thinking about it for a while, I decided to go through with it, and now I am really happy I did. Even though you can't see my face, when I see the picture I'm reminded of the significant part I played in the project (I'm the only minority featured on the bus)and it reassures me that I am able to "make waves" when I put my heart and mind into it.

Its funny because I was feeling a little misguided earlier today, and I happened to see a quick clip of the bus in a promo video. All the good memories came flooding back and I wanted to share my story with you because I don't feel like I share enough about what I did previously in the music industry.

I didn't just appear out of nowhere, I just decided in 2007 to shift my focus toward being an artist. So far, I have accomplished a lot in a short time, I have two songs on an independent film (Love Bones by Deri Tyton) and I have my album, "Society's View". I am very much a work in progress yet I'm not new to the industry at all (12 years and counting!), and I don't plan on going anywhere, anytime soon!

The Atlanta Powerpreneur Series

Last night I attended THE ATLANTA POWERPRENEUR SPOTLIGHT SERIES, created by marketing and branding Guru, Melissa Dawn Johnson, in conjunction with Atlanta Mayor, Kasim Reed's Office. Although I arrived late...I was able to hear some great advice from successful entreprenuers in Atlanta. Below is the information. A Review of my CD

I know, I know, I haven't written in my blog all year, but I promise that it will change very soon.

Moving Forward-Systematically

Today, I spent the day uploading my video (finally) to my own Youtube page. When you are an independent artist, you have to wear SO MANY hats. Family, I have to be honest with you...I'm really trying to take it one day at a time. I know that if I put one foot in front of the other, and work really hard at getting everything together properly...everything will be fine.

The pink sneaker's designed by the one and only, Mr. Kanye West, helped me establish mindset for this post. In any "career game", you have to be innovative, frugal as possible (without actually being/looking cheap :) ) and it is very important for you to diversify (without spreading yourself too thin).

Instead of leading my musical career decisions based on emotion and fear, In 2011, I am going to try systematically strategic. Meaning that, I am going to set up certain strategies and execute them in very systematic (yet creative) ways.

I'm going to keep us all in my prayers :)

It's time to expand my territory!

Jabez prayed to the God of Israel,"Oh that Thou would bless me indeed, and enlarge my coast [territory], and that Thine hand might be with me, and that Thou would keep me from evil, that it may not be to my sorrow!' And God granted him that which he requested." 1 Chron 4:10

I'm at a point in my life where I find myself feeling a little anxious. Not because things aren't going well, but because I feel like I have all the tools I need to succeed...if only I had a team that worked with me on a daily basis to help promote my music and create more opportunities.

You may not know this, but I've been involved in the music/entertainment industry since 1999, and have of course accumulated lots of great contacts. The funny thing about that is that since I stepped into the role of "artist" about four years ago, I find myself being very reluctant to contact any of those great contacts to ask for assistance with my personal career.

Well, a couple days ago, I decided to challenge myself, and just start voicing my needs to the universe. I do need to be out in the public more performing, I do need to get a promotion team together, I do need help with creating my overall "brand" and if I know some of the best in the "business", why not call on them? I'm not asking for a hand out, actually I'm looking for what my good friend, Derek "Prettyboy" Dow, would say..."a hand up" :) And if they are too busy...hopefully they can connect me to another professional that can be genuine and really assist me.

So, today, once again, I'm sending out my own prayer into the universe...Lord, please expand my territory, please shield me from evil, please let all my actions to be positive, peaceful, and productive...Amen!

I've been going through some, shall I say, "self-inflicted" trials and tribulations, especially financially. We've been "robbing Peter to pay Paul" to try to accomplish some of the goals we have set for ourselves.

I mean, you are suppose to be willing to make major sacrifices for your purpose right? Well, I guess when I think about it, I would probably be feeling the same way if I wouldn't have made my new music video and paid all my bills on time :)

Don't get me wrong, we're not extremely behind, its just that's its amazing how 2 to 3 hundred dollars can put you in a temporary financial bind!!

Oh well, by tomorrow, I'll be able to re-start my budget, and hopefully get it back on the right track.

Next video...I'm paying everything with cash. Forget waiting for the store to credit my debit card back for items I returned because we didn't need them.

We were blessed to be able to have the production team that we did, and they worked for free!!

The most expensive thing was the food, and the caterer did a great job with creating a feast on a low budget.

When I think about it, I have so much to be thankful for :)
